Santis Health: Charting a Bold Future for Canada’s Health Workforce Webinar Recap

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Canadian health system faced unprecedented challenges, shedding light on capacity issues and the need for innovative solutions. Recognizing the urgency for change, the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants (CAPA) took a proactive stance by attending a webinar on November 20, 2023, Hosted by Santis Health. The session gathered key experts, including Dr. Kathleen Ross, President of the Canadian Medical Association; Dr. Sylvain Brousseau, President of the Canadian Nurses Association; Dr. Ivy Bourgeault, Professor at the University of Ottawa; and Kirsten Luomala, President of Canadian Association of Physician Assistants (CAPA).  

The webinar, moderated by Victoria Wiebe, Director of Strategy and Policy at Santis Health, along with Marcel Saulnier, Associate and former Associate Assistant Deputy Minister at Health Canada, aimed to delve into the challenges facing Canada's health workforce and identify the collaborative strategies needed to drive meaningful change.

Capacity Challenges: The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the existing capacity challenges within the health system. The panelists discussed the need for a collective commitment from governments, providers, and organizations to address these challenges head-on. 

Human Resources in Focus: The discussion emphasized the importance of prioritizing health human resources. Dr. Kathleen Ross highlighted the need for a multi-pronged approach, including innovative training programs and collaboration between healthcare professions.
