The Physician Assistant will work under the direct supervision of an immediately available Attending Trauma Physician or General Surgeon within a multidisciplinary team in an academic in-patient setting. The Physician Assistant will play a major role in facilitating consistent application of clinical protocols and continuity of care, and will also identify patients with acute clinical issues common to general surgery patients and work within the multidisciplinary team to appropriately manage patient care. The Physician Assistant will provide a full range of physician assistant services in accordance with privileges granted, request consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health care resources as indicated, order diagnostic tests as applicable, prescribe and dispense medications as delineated by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.

Hamilton Health Sciences

The Medical Affairs department is responsible for overseeing administration for Professional Staff at Hamilton Health Sciences. Medical Affairs works closely with the Executive Vice President & Chief Medical Executive, the Senior Medical Officer, and Physician Chiefs. Medical Affairs supports medical workforce recruitment, credentialing, resource planning/allocation, education, and communication within the hospital. The department supports medical learners at McMaster University Faculty of Health Science (FHS), partnering closely with the leadership of FHS.

The General Surgery/Trauma program at the Hamilton General Hospital (HGH) offers full services for most sub-specialties of General Surgery. HGH hosts the region's Level One Trauma Program, caring for over 500 multiple trauma patients per year. General Surgery at HGH performs more than 1,600 general surgeries - over 600 of them were emergencies. HGH has one post-op ward with 26 ward beds and 6 step-down beds. In-patient services are provided via consults and out-patient services are provided through established out-patient clinics. Collaboration with non-surgical partners in multi-disciplinary care is an important part of the clinical care provided by the General Surgery team.
