The Awards Nominations Process

2019 CAPA Awards:
Nomination Deadline Extended!

Every year CAPA recognizes one or more of its members with one of two awards: the CAPA Honour Roll and the Tom Ashman Physician Assistant of the Year Award.

CAPA, in collaboration with the Canadian Physician Assistant Education Association, also recognizes the role of educators by jointly awarding one outstanding individual the CPAEA/CAPA PA Educator of the Year Award.

The award recipients will be recognized at the Awards Gala and President’s Dinner on Saturday October 26, 2019 at the CAPA Annual Conference in Niagara Falls.

How to Submit a Nomination

If you wish to nominate someone, please send a detailed submission to CAPA at admin@capa-acam.ca explaining why you feel the individual should be recognized. The deadline for submissions is Friday, August 9, 2019. The CAPA Board of Directors reserves the right to abstain from selecting an award recipient from the candidates put forward if they do not appropriately fulfill the criteria listed below for each award.


Tom Ashman Physician Assistant of the Year Award

Recognizes:

  • A current member of CAPA who has demonstrated a long-term commitment to furthering the PA profession in Canada.

Criteria:

  • Must be a CAPA PA member in good standing.

Eligible contributions should include, but are not limited to, a mix of the following:

  • Well-recognized by members of the PA profession and others;
  • Demonstrated a long-term commitment to furthering the PA profession in Canada;
  • A vocal advocate for the PA profession;
  • Actively reaches out to stakeholders, government, or others that can impact the advancement of the profession in Canada;
  • Engages in an initiative that raises awareness or helps the profession grow;
  • A volunteer within their community.

Who Can Be Nominated?

  • Current PA members of CAPA, excluding previous winners within the last 5 years. CAPA Board Members cannot be nominated during their term.

Who Can Nominate?

  • Colleagues, co-workers, physicians, patients, friends, CAPA Board members and CAPA staff.
  • Self-nomination by an individual is excluded.

Evaluation of Nominations:

  • The Awards Committee will make a recommendation to the CAPA Board of Directors.

Honour Roll

Recognizes:

  • An individual for outstanding contribution to the promotion and development of the PA profession in Canada.

Criteria:

  • Well-recognized by members of the PA profession and others.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to furthering the PA profession in Canada.

Who Can Be Nominated?

  • Anyone, excluding previous winners of the award within the last 5 years.

Who Can Nominate?

  • Current members of CAPA, CAPA Board members and CAPA staff.
  • Self-nomination by an individual is excluded.

Evaluation of Nominations:

  • The Awards Committee will make a recommendation to the CAPA Board of Directors.

CPAEA / CAPA PA Educator of the Year Award

Recognizes:

  • An individual who has had a significant impact on the education of PAs in Canada.

Criteria:

  • The award recipient will be an individual who has been involved in teaching PA students, either clinically or academically. Some examples may include PA program faculty, clinical preceptors, guest facilitators, or course instructors. The award recipient may be a PA, a physician, or from another professional background.
  • The criteria for the nomination are based on the roles outlined in the National Competency Profile (CanMEDS-PA) and adapted to reflect the roles of a PA educator.

Who Can Be Nominated?

  • PA program faculty, clinical preceptors, guest facilitators, or course instructors.
  • This excludes previous winners of the award within the past 5 years.

Who Can Nominate?

  • Current members of CAPA and CPAEA;
  • CAPA Board members;
  • CPAEA Board members;
  • CAPA staff.
  • Self-nomination by an individual is excluded.

Evaluation of Nominations

  • The Awards Committee will make a recommendation to the CAPA Board of Directors and the CPAEA.
